How I Became an iGaming Expert: A 5-Year Journey

At a CAGR of 6.51% between 2024 and 2028, the iGaming industry has turned into a behemoth in the past few years. Although the concept has been around since the mid-1990s, it’s only recently that it grew exponentially.

I was fortunate enough to get started back in 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the earth. Thanks to (not really) all the time people had in their hands as well as the money they got from government reliefs, a lot of money was injected into online gambling.

Seeing the potential for taxes and economic growth, many countries around the world have started easing up on iGaming regulations. All of it cumulatively led to the massive CAGR I just mentioned.

Obviously, all the demand means more operators coming into business and more affiliates joining these platforms to earn commissions. As you may already know, affiliates’ power lies in their content.

And that’s where iGaming writers like us come into play.

The Beginning

When I first received a task related on iGaming, I was all over the place. Sure, I’ve heard of casino games and I knew how they looked but I never had to research what they were.

The early tasks were primarily news pieces for an online portal that shared the latest trends and news from the industry.

Eventually, my company started getting more clients that required casino reviews, game reviews, game guides, and so on.

Not gonna lie here, the first few years of the stuff I did were very shitty. I didn’t know any better and at that time, resources were very limited on the internet. Most of the third-party sources I could find were incohesive and didn’t help much.

Over the next 6 months or a year, we worked with plenty of iGaming companies. And as I worked more, I learned more about the industry. I finally understood what wagering requirements meant, how slot RTP works, how certain table games work, and how to put everything together in a cohesive piece.

The iGaming Revolution

After only a few months of work, the COVID-19 pandemic hit us. And that was pretty much the X-factor for me as well as my company. We were flooded with work from multiple affiliates who wanted quick turnaround on big batches of casino reviews.

Eventually, sports betting came into play. I vividly remember because it was the Euro 2020 when we got an influx of sports betting tasks from a Canadian client.

For me, understanding the scope of sports betting was much harder than understanding casinos. It took me around 3 months to understand the odds alone! I like to think that I’m not dumb to catch on. Rather, it was a lack of good resources online that stopped me from growing faster.

But I got the hang of it in due time.

Work volume was increasing and we, as a company, had to keep up. So, we started launching hiring campaigns. I designed a training module to get them onboard the iGaming wagon.

For the next couple of years, we hired over 10 people and trained them to become iGaming writers. I was fortunate enough to be the head trainer and my company compensated me well for these sessions.

Personal Growth

As I started gaining more insights into the industry and how it all worked, I got the opportunity to work with my own clients. A good chunk of them were iGaming affiliates who wanted high-quality content on their websites.

Of course, when you cut out the middlemen, aka the company, the pay is higher. As a result, I could spend more time on research and crafting better-quality content.

5 years later, I can proudly say that I’m one of the top 1% iGaming writers in the world.
